“The Cloud” (Cloud storage)

By Devonte Longmire

What is it?

The Cloud is a commercially available technology—it refers to storing and accessing data and programs over the internet instead of on your personal computer or local device.

Tech understandabiliy: Beginner

Simple One-Sentence Definition

The Cloud is a way to save files and use software online so you can access them from any device with internet access.

Analogy or Comparison that makes the concept relatable

The Cloud is like a digital storage locker—you can drop your stuff in it from anywhere and pick it up later from another place, as long as you have the key (your login).

Why it matters?

The Cloud makes everyday life easier and more flexible. Instead of needing to carry around a USB drive or save everything on one computer, you can store photos, documents, and even full programs online. Services like Google Drive, iCloud, and Dropbox are cloud-based, which means your files are backed up and available from your phone, tablet, or computer. It also allows companies to run large websites or apps without needing massive on-site servers.

Fun Fact

The term “cloud” comes from the cloud-shaped symbol used in diagrams to represent the internet—there’s no actual fluffy cloud involved!
